FINE RARE & EARLY ANTIQUE HAND MADE CHARMING FOLK ART RED TOLEWARE
EARLY – MID 1800'S GENTLEMAN’S SNUFF / TOBACCO BOX / MATCH SAFE
OR LADIES KEEPSAKE / JEWELRY / TRINKET BOX
This is a Fine, Rare & Early Antique Hand Made Charming Folk Art red toleware hand painted tin box. These were utilitarian pieces intended for multi-purpose use by both men and women but are mostly associate as being a Gentleman’s tobacco or snuff box.
In the 18th to 19th Century, almost all men used tobacco of some sort, and the preferred venue for Gentlemen was tobacco for pipe smoking or powered tobacco in the form of snuff; finely ground tobacco that was sniffed. Snuff was mostly popular from the mid 1700's to about the mid 1800's, when chewing or smoking tobacco became more prevalent. This size case could have been used as a tabletop box; and the bottom wear pattern and overall fine condition suggests it was used tabletop. However, this size piece was also small enough to carry in a pocket to carry powdered snuff, or loose tobacco to be smoked in a pipe bowl or chewed. Later in the mid-late 1800's, cigarettes became more fashionable, although some still preferred snuff; and today there is a resurgence of snuff use.
This tin box would have been a fine personal accoutrement for most period men; artfully crafted, eye appealing red paint tobacco accessory such as this, with a quaint period Folk Art hand painted small cluster of buildings in a rural setting top panel. The top has 3 hand painted gold borders; an outside wide stripe, a parallel thin stripe, and a zig zag pattern with accents inside border. All 4 sides have gold pinstripes at the top and bottom that are mostly intact, as are the top 3 borders. The red pain appears shiny as if the enamel paint were heated to bond to the metal and create a glaze. This appears to be original, as the small chips to the paint show the naturally occurring deep dark bare metal. As can be expected, there is naturally occurring surface crazing that can be seen with magnification, a few minor spots of flaking, with wear mostly to the edges of the bottom; all of which are perfectly normal and acceptable for any object that is 175+ years old. Even then, these snuff boxes were considered an Object D' Art, status symbol, and for most men, a necessary Gentleman's accoutrement.
There are dozens and dozens of different sizes, shapes and materials of snuff boxes made over this approximately 1725 - 1850 period when snuff was en vogue and its popularity was at its peak. There were less expensive pocket containers available to the masses in every size and material, such as Papier Mache` snuff boxes that began to be created around the mid to late 1700’s and were in wide use for most commoners until about the mid 1800's.
Initially, snuff initially was a partaken by men, and considered improper for women. However, by the late 1700's, women of means began to exercise their "rights” and began to partake of snuff; in much the same fashion women began smoking cigarettes in the 20th century. This handmade piece dates to the 1825 – 1850 period; and is completely hand made in the early, functional, rectangular box style. This hand painted tin container is about 4 3/8" wide X 2 3/4" deep X 1" tall and weighs 3.8 ounces or 109 grams. The top is affixed by a small handmade 3-piece tin hinge that is counter sunk in the top back side of the base, attached to a large tin tab that is secured to the back inside panel with solder. The lid has a thin, slightly recessed lip across the front and sides of the lid to secure the powdered contents when used for snuff; thus, making this box a dual-purpose piece used for Gentlemen who preferred snuff or one who preferred loose tobacco for smoking or chewing. The lid closes properly and stays closed with a tight seal to the top edge of the base. Considering its extreme age, all 4 sides, the top and bottom are in excellent condition, with no dings, dents, damage, repairs, or alterations. The inside appears untouched, with traces of old snuff; and this piece has seen light wear and has been well cared for over its approximate 175 + year lifespan. This is a charming piece of Folk Art in untouched, as found, fine condition overall for its extreme age. This would be perfect for any Folk Art, smalls, snuff, snuff box, match safe or tobacco collection / display; or use for keepsakes / a ring box / jewelry box / knickknacks, or as a paper weight / desk accessory / conversation piece / gift.

claims such as doesn't match description or photos, doesn't seem authentic, Doesn't fit, Wrong item sent, Missing parts or pieces, Doesn't work or defective, Arrived damaged. If you wish to take advantage of any of the issue resolution options available from the seller, you must have the business courtesy to discuss any potential issue within 3 days of receipt, and gain agreement with the seller prior to requesting a return through eBay, leaving feedback or initiating any online dispute process. By doing so, buyers commit to negotiate in good faith, and that they have not initiated any other form of resolution processing; including eBay / PayPal dispute process or credit card charge backs, or purchases where you have been or may be compensated by a third party. Possible buyer / seller resolution examples are: if seller and buyer agree that an item is significantly different than described and photographed, exchanging an item for a different item from the seller (whether listed or unlisted), credit from the seller against any current or future item, adjustment, trade, return, or any other arrangement that is mutually agreed upon between the seller and the buyer, and confirmed in writing via eBay's email system. These options are designed to expedite resolution of any potential issue quickly, easily and amicably, in lieu of eBay / PayPal on-line dispute resolution process which is lengthy, laborious, and allows decisions to be made by a 3rd party instead of the principals; i.e., the buyer & seller. Due to a myriad of International and U.S. Federal, State, Territory, County, City or Local law(s), ordinance(s), restrictions(s) or regulation(s), some articles shipped via U.S.P.S. may have restrictions and / or regulations that may apply to your article(s) shipped to a U.S. address. Any item returned must be pre-approved by the seller and received by seller within 7 days from receipt. If a buyer claims the item is damaged in shipping, it must send photographic proof on eBays email system, gain agreement with the seller, and item must be returned before buyer enters a feedback comment and before any exchange, credit or refund is issued. Buyer must use appropriate shipping, delivery confirmation and / or signature confirmation (items 0 ) and/or insurance at the buyers expense.
